A Bernoulli Gate for Electronic Music Applications, realised in Hardware

README

FLIP Main Board

This folder contains details of the Main Board for the Eurorack implementation of the FLIP Bernoulli Gate, expressed as a KiCad project.

There is a KiCad Project file a schematic file and a PCB file.

JLC made my prototype PCBs (seen above) and did their usual great job.

There is also a schematic (click on the image below to open a larger version) and a BoM, saved as an Excel file

The schematic above follows pretty closely the system-level schematic presented in the stripboard folder apart from the fact that I have swapped the inverters (from the 40106) on the input to the Clock output stage and in the State Machine with unused gates in the 4001 package. This was done solely for convenience in laying out the PCB and has no impact on system operation - the Schmitt trigger inputs were not being exploited and the NOR gates can work perfectly well as inverters. Obviously, all the other 'missing' elements (user interface components, output buffers, etc) are on the control board.

This is only the second project I've developed in KiCad and I'm still feeling my way around. There are two issues on the main board PCB which could be better. The first is the (default, library) footprint for the transistors Q1:3, which has unnecessarily small and close pads. It works, but it asks a lot during the soldering phase! The second is proximity of the 12V line to mounting hole H2 on the bottom of the board; there isn't really enough safe clearance here for a full M3 washer. I managed this issue on my first build by using an insulated spacer between the main and control boards at this position; you could also use a single insulated washer. Whilst neither of these issues prevent use of the main board PCB as it stands, I will modify both if a "v2" revision of the main board PCB is ever made.
